Stuck in Sydney - one more day of adventure

27/09/11

Another unexpected day to add to my adventure in Sydney. Arrived in Sydney around 6.30am in the morning and we heard that there could be delays with the strike. Customs staff were striking between 6-7 am and then 8-9am. So when we arrived in the airport there was a massive line up of people trying to enter Australia, the lines were backed up so far that they sort of went through the duty free shops as well. I eventually made my way through and got the last stamp of my trip when I realised I didn’t get a stamp to say I exited the USA – oh bother.

I went straight through to customs after waiting for a long time for my back pack and headed through to another very big long queue through customs because I had been hiking through the USA and had some American chocolates – hersheys and peanut buttercups. I was getting a little concerned as it was 5 to 8 and I was near the front of the line but didn’t want to have to get stuck there for an hour with the next strike action as some of the other stations had already shut down. Luckily I had my shoes on the outside of my bag for a quick inspection and I had my choccies bag on the outside area so I actually got passed through – the first time I hadn’t been checked and my bag  searched when returning home – pheww.

Next I went straight to the domestic transfer and there was a massive line – I probably should have asked someone to do an on-line check in for me. Some people were cracking up over the missed flights and delays and when I finally got to the front of the queue my flight was delayed from 1pm to 5.45pm – noooo! Was a little concerned Glen wouldn’t be able to pick me up with the later time and how I would spend the extra time as I hadn’t slept properly since the day before and had been up since 3am that morning.

After ditching my bag and my smaller backpack I bought a return train ticket into the city and headed to Circular Quay – since I’d travelled round the world by myself – Sydney shouldn’t be a problem. Thankfully I know my way around Sydney pretty well so from Circular Quay I headed around towards the Harbour Bridge, stopped off at the Australian Sudoku championships and did one before grabbing lunch at Hungry Jacks and eating it at the steps of the Opera House.

After a lap around the Opera House I headed to the Botanic Gardens and spent the next few hours meandering around the foreshore, stopping every so often to enjoy the view, take in the scenery, read and reflect on my adventure around the world.

Hit a slight snag with Glen uncertain about how to get me home with the later time home but Sarah and Craig came to the rescue and agreed to bring my beast down to Brisvegas to grab me from the airport.

Finally got to my flight at 6.05pm now and was half asleep before take-off. So glad to arrive back in Queensland territory around 8pm and on my way home.

Universal – Take 2!

Had an extra fun-filled day with the crew – Allison, Andrea, Zeddy, Mikey and me at Universal Studios – again. Was amazing how much I had etched the place in my brain the first time, it was so clearly what I had remembered from 3 years ago.

We raced down to the lower lot first and went on the Mummy ride and Jurassic Park – twice! Then we headed to the Animal Actors for Mikey – not so much into thrill rides and had a bite to eat before seeing the special effects show – with some old and new movie tricks. Enjoyed the Simpson simulator ride thoroughly again, did the studio tour with the King Kong in 3D, the largest 3D screen in the world – a huge tunnel. They were filming on Wisteria Lane again, and jaws attacked similarly as in 2008. We got absolutely, well I got absolutely soaked in the water World show, no less than 4 times and tried to dry off in the Terminator 3D experience.

23/09/11

TV show audience, Warner Brother’s Studios and that’s all folks!

We were up early to try to get to CBS studios and be part of a TV audience. The security guard wasn’t impressed and said we had to book online. Disappointed we checked out the Farmer’s Market and I sent home another package of souvenirs and clothes home. I then booked a Warner Brother’s VIP Tour.

We headed back to Hollywood to check some more attractions before heading to the studio. We had a look through Ripley’s Believe it or Not. I thought there would have been more weird stuff than there actually was. The mummified shrunken heads were pretty gross though. Grabbed a bite to eat at the Egyptian Theatre’s Maui café and it nearly made us late.

Upon arriving at WB I was surprised to see what was filmed there – Friends, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory to name a few. We could have even gone to the live taping of a new sitcom that night – but bother we were having a B Team Trek reunion dinner. We went through the lots and even got to go on some sets. We went into a sound stage were they shot The Goonies and A Perfect Storm and we got to go in Central Perk from Friends. The Museum had some great artifacts  from movies and shows like Inception, Mentalist, Gossip Girl, and a whole floor dedicated to Harry Potter. They had broomsticks, the egg from the Goblet of fire and the trophy and the sorting hat and stool. I was sorted in Gryffindor – yeh! We were held up by Ben Affleck’s cars from Argo before heading back to Hollywood to meet up with Jen and Kat and maybe a movie premiere.

Wrong day for the premier but we dined at the Kodak theatre plaza again and were part of a studio audience for ‘Do I Look Good’ some make over show! We got to clap and cheer on cue!

So after several attempts we actually did get to be a part of a TV show- fancy that!

24/09/11

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure Land – woah what a day.

After much deliberation about Disney or 6 Flags I went with Disney and thankfully upgraded my ticket to a pass hopper for both parks. I ran  through California Adventure first- did the rides – the moving ferris wheels, sweet, goofy’s flight coaster, the Monster’s Inc ride and then the best- The twilight Zone Tower of Terror! Initially I thought it was like Dreamworld’s – but no, so much better. Set in a hotel we were in an ‘elevator shaft’ and the ride moved up and down and back up and down in the dark and rather ghostly.

Next up I headed back to Disneyland and booked a fast pass for the Space Mountain Ride, watched the original Captain EO  film, went on the Matterhorn toboggan twice, yeh, rode on the Tea Cups –classic Disney and watched the parade. Wasn’t quite as spectacular the second time around.  I also got lots of photos from the Disney photographers, especially one with Tinkerbell in front of the castle. Also went on the Indiana Jones rides – always so fun before heading back to California Adventure for the World of Colour Show. I noticed whilst in the ferris wheel that there were hundreds of fountains in the Paradise Pier Lake.

It was stunningly spectacular. They used led lights, played clips of classic Disney animated movies and actually played the movie on the screen created by a fine mist of water – wow. Movies like Lady and the Tramp, Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas and Monster’ Inc. There was even some fire involved for Peter Pan. It was definitely a highlight and worth getting a little wet.

What a fantastic way to spend my last full day in the USA – at Disney.

25/09/11

Adios America and I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride of Anna’s Adventures around the world in 90 days.

A nice sleep in before the long trip home, I packed and then Andrea and  I hit the town – downtown LA. We went through the major blocks around the LA Times, Police Department, City Hall, Court House and Disney Concert Hall.

Then took a mighty long bus ride to Santa Monica Pier and the Pacific. Went on the ferris wheel at Paradise Park, the only solar powered one in the world before heading back. Whilst on board I couldn’t believe that it was three months since I was on the ferris wheel in London at the start of my journey and now it is all but over.

Made it back to Banana Bungalows just in time for the airport shuttle to LAX.

Well, 90 days, over thirty thousand kilometres, 16 countries and 4 continents my journey around the world comes to close – well almost, I’m still in LAX whilst writing. Being overseas feels the norm to me and Australia so very far away and long ago.  I can’t believe it is almost over but then I start playing the photo story in my and think – wow, yes I can believe it.

From Wimbledon to the US Open in New York, from 5 star accommodation at Hotel Albert and Gerty to tenting in the freezing cold Yellowstone Park in Wyoming, from the highest point in Europe at Jung Frau Switzerland to the lowest point on earth floating in the Dead Sea, from the top of Mt Sinai to the canyons in the Grand Tetons, from the rock where Jesus died to LA, from the house Anne Frank hid in to the happiest place on earth - Disneyland it has been an incredible journey.

I have learnt to be more comfortable all alone in the world, braver to tackle on new challenges and any challenge that comes my way knowing it will be ok and I can get through it one step at a time – being lost in London, fight delays in Italy, hiking up Mt Sinai after an attack of the hives, handling an infected leg on the road, attempting to move around LA, putting up a tent single handed and being around people 24-7 that have completely different values to me.

I have learned to make the most of every single second and not be sad at the end of something as I will always have the experiences and memories with me and that it wasn’t about the numbers of distance travelled, or racking up the places or landmarks seen but it’s all about people – sharing our precious time with my family, friends and my other brothers and sisters in Christ. Appreciate the time with them for on our life’s journey there aren’t that many people that we meet that are in our little neck of the woods for very long – so enjoy the time and opportunity we have we may be with them only a short while.

San Francisco to L.A. down the Pacific Coast

16/09/11

See you camping and bear boxes and bring on a bed in San Francisco.

Arrived in San Fran in the early afternoon and headed to the painted ladies – famous for movies and the city skyline in the background. Next we went the the Golden Gate Bridge – yeh I finally get to walk across it – not. Almost did. Walked almost the entire length in the freezing wind before having to turn around and go all the way back –nooo!

Was a good walk/run could feel a few sore muscle from yesterday though. Eating out in China Town tonight and Alcatraz and a grid iron game tomorrow – can’t wait to go around Frisco again tomorrow.

 17/09/11

A long day and filled with San Francisco sites – cable cars, Alcatraz, a college football game at the baseball stadium, China Town, Lombard Street and a long wait for the trip home.

Headed to Pier 33 to grab out Alcatraz tickets and check out the wharf. We breakfast at a surfie style diner and it was yummy – a breakfast sandwich for me and tasty – egg, bacon, chips and a great hot choc. We made a quick stop at a college shop and bought up some California Bear t-shirts for the game before heading to the rock.

It was exciting for the others, not quite the same for me. I still enjoyed it but not quite as much as the first time. Allison and I were the only ones to make it back on the 1pm ferry so we made our way by cable car back to Market and Powell so we could grab tickets for everyone. The cheapest tickets were $65 – for a college game – what!

We ended up buying some from a scalper and I was a little nervous that the tickets wouldn’t be any good – such relief when we got through the gates. Great seats in the lower section except for the pole. Moved over a few spots later and it was  perfect. California Bears were on fire and smashed the opposition. My camera even worked for a while. The marching band was amazing about 200+ in it and the music and formations were great. I can’t believe how many players are on a team in grid iron – about 100 we reckon.

Afterwards we did some shopping in China Town for cheap souvenirs, then made our way to the wonkiest street in the world – Lombard and we walked up through the zig zags and then headed to the pier for some ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s and then attempted to head home – cable cars and trams just didn’t want to arrive for us for quite some time.

20/09/11

The last few days of our cross-country trek and the end of my organised adventure.

18/09/11

We left San Francisco and headed to Monterey. It was a windy road and a few passengers were a little motion sick. Another bushy camp site and a nice western style dinner.

19/09/11

From Monterey we made the idyllic road trip down the scenic Sur Highway, highway 101, much like the Great Ocean road on the other side of the Pacific. There were some low clouds, rocky mountain outcrops, waterfalls and rocks protruding through the water. We did one totally bush hike that cut our legs and skirted along the mountains and no waterfall – yikes! We ended up on the beach and were excited at the prospect of perhaps camping on the beach. Alas it would have been cold, windy and wet so we went back to the creek just behind the sand dunes. We celebrated the last night of our trek together and had the State Police pop in for a visit.

20/09/11

Our final day together as Northern Trail ‘B’ team. We stopped off at Santa Barbara to check out the pier before having a great lunch stop at In and Out. Great fresh burgers and then off to Hollywood! We had a little tour through LA, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Making a stop along the walk of fame and having a picture with the Hollywood sign in the background. Then off to our final stop the Hacienda Hotel just near the airport.

Sad to see it all end and a little nervous now I’m back by myself –especially as my accommodation is a little far out of the city – I thought it was closer so maybe a little bit of a hike in and out of the city. Once I get to my next stop and find my way around I should be ok though – I hope!

Whilst wating around at my best western luxurious room I received a call from the office to say I had a package delivered – woohoo my star wars x-wing. I continued trying to work out how to get into the city and to Disnelyand and Universal, Hollywood and Downtown L.A. when I thought – why don’t I get out of here and try and  book where some of the other trekkers are – the Banana Bungalows – West Hollywood. I checked them out on the net and they had tours from there to Disney and other places so I decided to call them and if they had a vacancy I would go for it before it got too late. I was prepared to forfeit my nights already paid if I could get in. I rang them and yeh – they had a vacancy in the dorms for me – thank the Lord – only I had to give up my comfy queen bed and private room!

I went back to the desk to try and get  my 4th night refunded and the lady was Catia was so nice she reimburst the whole amount and didn’t even charge me for my 2 hour stay.  I contemplated a taxi and then train and bus but I ended up going with a taxi – a chauffeur for the 1 hour drive. Arrived at banana and soon ran into Mikey, Zeddy and Andy, was nice to see some familiar faces.

I chatted to my roommate another Aussie and with Mikey we headed into Hollywood, I activated my LA card to get free entry in 40+ attractions and we had dinner in the Kodak Theatre plaza. After walking around and taking a look at the Roosevelt – famous for housing Marilyn Monroe we headed back to Banana.

Hitting Universal Studios tomorrow with most of the gang and we will try to get Andrea and Allison in to – although they already missed out on staying at banana, Allison was robbed in her dorm room. Thankfully I wasn’t staying there.

Wyoming to Yosemite - horse riding to hiking

11/09/11
A relaxing horse ride through Wyoming, remembering September 11 ten years on, a western dinner at a sports bar and Sam Stosur winning the US Open – woohoo!

Seven of our awesome team  went for a horse ride. I had Bunny to ride on and she was great at first and when I did some horse whispering to encourage her but towards the end she was getting a little stubborn and I needed to give her a few kicks to keep her going. It was great ride up the switchback trail up the mountains and had a fantastic view of the mountains and valley over Jackson. The funniest moment was Mickey’s horse going the high ride constantly and then running him into the tree repeatedly.

Afterwards we had lunch at a diner and had the best burgers in town – they were fab and loved the waffle fries. In the afternoon we had a rest, I even fell asleep in the van on a shopping stop and did a load of washing – attempting to avoid using the quarters of the states. Only a few states to go for the whole set – now a few to go for the whole set!

Went for dinner at the sports bar and was able to watch the NFL Dallas Cowboys and the baseball amongst September 11 memorials. Also watched a bit of Sam’s maiden grand slam win. Had a great fried chicken dinner – Momma’s special chicken.

Tomorrow we are off to Idaho & Nevada and an 8 hour van drive – uh oh.

12/09/11

Rolling hills, trees, more rolling trees, mountains and going to the moon!

A huge drive again and a quick stop off in Idaho at the Craters on the moon. Created by old lave flows and the remnants of these and the flora that was forever imprinted from these lava flows. Some amazing scenery and we all did our best moon walk impressions along the trails.

Back on the road and off to Nevada!

13/09/11

An ultra early morning made worse by my alarm not going off and another huge drive to Lake Tahoe – where we had fun jet skiing and a sunset sail.

Unfortunately my phone hadn’t changed time zones when I’d gone to bed but it did whilst I was asleep and I had set my alarm an hour later and because of the change it didn’t go off and I got into a little trouble pulling my tent down late – lucky I had already packed the night before.
After a long trip and a road block around an accident we arrived at the picturesque Lake Tahoe. It was pretty spectacular and a few of us decided to go on the jet ski. The boys went solo and three us shared our time. Allison and I went for 40 minutes and played some cat mouse games with the boys. After 40 minutes and sharing the driving time we came back in to share our time with Andrea. We headed to camp on the pine forest hill – very picturesque and we set up before heading back to the waterfront for our sunset cruise. We sat up the front on the bow as we sailed across Lake Tahoe. It was a great sunset with some reddish tinges in the clouds and then a lightning show to finish off with – thankfully it was far away.

We headed back to camp for a campfire after a run in with the ‘A team’ and some nasty comments after one of our crew had a jet ski prang.

14/09/11

A bear in camp, trees, giant trees and more giant trees.

Headed off to Yosemite this morning and the last of the bear country. Was absolutely envious when Christy shared her bear encounter form this morning. She went to the office at 1am in the morning and on her way back to the tent saw a black bear. She was so freaked out she spent the night in the ladies. I  couldn’t believe it but the mess around the trash was proof. The ni was just jealous she got to see a bear – although it may have been quite terrifying!

At Yosemite we had a quick picture opportunity at Half Dome before heading to the Sequoia Grove. We had a few hours to make it to the trees that are so big they cut a hole through one and used to drive vehicles through it for 80 years. Got some classic pics and then I crossed the creek and there was another one that you could crawl through length wise. I loved it and talked an old lady from Idaho into following me through as well.

We then headed for an adventurous journey to camp, down a narrow winding and bumpy road the GPS suggested. We hit a hair pin and it took quite an effort to back it up and turn around.

15/09/11

Hills, hiking and waterfalls.

6 of us set out on the hike of a lifetime. Our goal was the Nevada and Vernal Falls about 12km round trip. The journey was pretty much – up, up and away. It was so steep and the switchbacks were massive. Two and a half hours later we could see the massive waterfall of the Nevada Falls. They were mighty and powerful and freezing! Dipped my feet into them and we had our lunch in a beautiful spot.

Then we headed back down the granite mountain. A tree  branch nearly hit Kat, Jen and Mikey and then we came across the Vernal Falls – maybe even more impressive than the Nevada Falls. The only problem – the stair case down both falls – woah so steep and slippery. Two and a half hours later we finally reached the bottom and we needed a good stretch. We snoozed through the Yosemite movie before having some pizza for dinner and a quiet night back at camp!

The hike was in Mt Sinai proportions but the stunning waterfalls made it spectacular in a different way. We complete our cross country trek tomorrow and arrive in San Francisco.

Sunday 11 September 2011

Chicago to cowboy country - Jackson Wyoming

3/09/11

Clocking up the miles into Illonios, a bike tour, city lights, ascending the heights, take me out to the ball game and jazz.

Arrived in the ‘windy city’ home of the brownie, ferris wheel, cracker jacks and McDonald’s in th afternoon. After a classic ‘deep dish’ pizza – woah so much cheese we went on the famous ‘Bobby’s bike tour.’ It was 3 hours of fun, exercise and great spots. We rode to the boardwalk along the lake, through town, over the Michigan Bridge, and to the colourful water fountain. We were very vocal along the way making our sound effects and ring the bell, with me on Vernal the Chicago bike.

Afterwards we decided to go up the John  Hancock building to the Ambassador lounge on the 96th floor – coz it was free and we could get drinks and dessert. I had a delicious chocolate mousse and drink. The view was spectacular especially out of the ladies ‘rest room’ overlooking the city. Some of the group headed home and a few of us went to check out the jazz in the home of jazz. We found an authentic bar with two bands working in tandem during the night. The others provided us with entertainment as we sat down and bopped to the jazzy beat.

Today we had a nice little sleep in and then headed out to the historic ‘Wrigley Field’ home of the Chicago Cubs. I went souvenir hunting and the game was actually gong quite quickly – not like the Yankees. After a few big hits and the score around 5-3 the heavens opened. It was quite funny watching the groundsmen cover the diamond and one guy fell over and was covered with the plastic! We decided not to wait for the rain delay and heaed back to our plush hostel.

The Kiwis and Aussies combined for dinner at a nice German place, lamb chops – yummo and a salad and then a few of us headed to the highest building in the USA and western hemisphere – Willis, formally Sear’s Tower, all the way up to the 103rd floor and the world’s tallest building for about 22 years. The views were fantastic and I dared to go out on the glass bottom viewing deck and have a piccy taken. Once satisfied we did some souvenir shopping before heading back home to pack and enjoy a comfy bed.

4/09/11
800 clicks in one day, into state number 8, a Walmart experience, the mighty Mississippi, fun and games at the Spam Museum, stopping off with the green elf, no, leprechaun, no the Green giant and camping in Jackson Minnesota.

The ridgy didge American road trip is well under way and we are nearly half away across the USA. We stopped off to shop at Walmart for groceries, supplies and nibbles. Bought a great bargain – a mattress topper and yeh –  made my sleep  so much better.

We did a quick stop off at the Mississippi River for a photo opportunity and to see this massive river.

A bit of ‘cheesy’ America at the Spam museum learning about the history of spam. Zoe and I had a race canning the spam and she just got me – although afterwards we realised we hadn’t cooked it right in the process ; ).

Another great photo stop at the giant green man. He appears on cans of produce and many people were coming to see him. So they decided to raise the money to build the giant green man in Blue Earth, hmm maybe he should have been the giant blue man!

Arrived at camp in the evening and went for a hay ride around and around the camp site singing camp songs and scaring the local campers. We had a Minnesota fried chicken dinner and it was indeed finger licking good. Finished the night off with a camp fire entertained by Mikey (Peewee Herman) and some of his crazy, yet hilarious stories.

Looking forward to getting dressed up in 1800s gear tomorrow and a dusk hike around Mount Rushmore – yeehaa!

6/08/11

The wild wild west, dress ups, hiking around a lunar landscape in the badlands, spires, mountains and towers – all au natural – picturesque is an understatement.

1880s town was our a major stop on Monday. This little old town was just like being in an old western movie. So most of us joined in the spirit and played dress ups. The boys made great cowboys, some were Mexicans and the girls got dressed to kill. One Pochohontas but the rest of us were either prim and proper ladies or dressing dangerously. I even had to wear a petty coat – didn’t know how to tie it up but neither did one of the other girls ; ) and could swirl my dress around.

Kaz, Jen, looking very innocent in her bonnet and I went outside and were picked up by the horse and cart for a ride straight away. Jen even took the reins and drove us around the town. We then took some group photos with all our gear on and in the different venues like the hotel, jail and with the sign. Some of the girls didn’t want to give their outfits back – I was quite happy to ditch the petty coat and dress, as can be expected.

Next up we made our scenic journey to the Black Hills and to the Badlands, famous for their lunarscape qualities and pointy spires. It really was like being on another planet with the grey rock with reddish lines throughout. We were fortunate enough to go for a hike, even climb the wooden ladder and have a beautiful look out over the valley. Tried a few jumping photos and classic poses to get into the Trek America book. Was a little daunting descending down the ladder backwards, Larry and Bob flew back down. We set up camp against this mighty backdrop, played a little soccer and chatted to some Atlanta Georgian’s as we politely asked to use their power outlet to charge our batteries, phones and laptops. They told us that 2 people had been fatally wounded at Yellowstone in the past 3 weeks – uh oh, they recommended Bear spray – like a bear capsicum spray.

Tuesday was a magnificent day of God’s creativity on display. We drove through the Badlands with landscape changing ever so slightly continuously. It was very reminiscent of of the Grand Canyon but on a smaller scale and with greyer rocks. The Badlands were a very pleasant surprise for me.

The sites continued as we headed to Mt Rushmore. Wow, we saw George first and he was quite impressive, soon we could Abraham, Jefferson and Teddy. We watched the movie about the making of the Mountain. Originally meant to be western heroes, but the creator thought it would be better to be a national monument. Additionally it was meant to be from their waist up but lack of funds prevented this. The original sculpture dies before completion and his son continued the project. They used lots of dynamite to carve the features and a protractor from the head with a scale model to know the dimensions of the faces and where to carve to. After some souvenir shopping and a stamp in my National Parks passport we headed to a monument still under construction over 60 years later – Crazy Horse. It will be 563 feet high when completed and bear the image of Crazy Horse on his horse pointing over the valley. It is a family project and totally funded by donations. Today, September 6 was the anniversary of Crazy Horse’s death and the sculptor’s birthday. At the gift shop they had – old coins and coin jewellery – yeh. They had some South Dakota quarters crafted into jewellery like the fish and cross in the coin and friendship coin necklaces that broke off into a cross and heart and some other designs.  Crazy horse was actually better than Mt Rushmore in some ways and we got some great pics with the finished scale model, the real thing in the background and me doing the pointing pose which is very similar to my pose – woohoo. Maybe I can be Pointing Platypus or Sitting Roo.

Finally we made another picturesque drive to Devil’s Tower. It is circular spire/rock a little like a blob of jelly. There was some nice cloud cover to add to the effect at sunset as we pitched our tents to this incredible back drop. An amazing day, state number 10 for the trip and fantastic choice to ride shotgun today – I’m so loving it!

7/08/11

A freezing night, bye bye Devil’s Tower and the amazing red rocks and into Cowboy Country in Cody Wyoming. Cody was the classic cowboy town, named after something to do with Buffalo Bill. There was grid iron practice going on at the high School and we actually had some free time to shop for souvenirs. There were even authentic cowboy boots and hats. I grabbed a fossilised shark tooth for my nephew and a few postcards. We headed to the Irma for a gun show. Reserved our seats for $2 and wow it was loud, got a right every time they went off even though I knew they were coming and especially the 12 gauge. The show featured some well known characters – Maverick and Calamity Jane to name a few. All of the bad guys ended up dead!

Afterwards we headed back to our teepees – yeh we didn’t have to set up tents and Dave, Zoe and I set about cooking. I must say it turned out pretty well, no left over meat so we must have done something right. Tortellini with fried chicken, cheese and herbs with a salad.

We headed done town to check out the country folk and went to the silver dollar – where dollar bills are stuck to the ceiling. By the time we arrived there we were feeling pretty tired so after a little while Zoe and I headed home to our tepee. Whilst we were excited at first about sleeping in a tepee, the hard ground and open bottoms didn’t fill us with confidence – I was paranoid a creepy crawly may visit me or my bag of gear – a few spiders quickly appeared to give me a scare- yikes!

Yellowstone tomorrow – I really hope to see a bear – from a distance of course , 2 people have been killed in the last 3 weeks.

8/09/11

The first national park in the world and what a grand one – trees, hills, rocks, geyers, waterfalls, lakes, elks, bison and there is still more to see!

We first past some beautiful country and lakes at Shoshone. Next we headed into Yellowstone. I was feeling a little queasy so I sat up the front – sorry Kat to steal your seat. The trip into the park would take 30 minutes – depending on the wild life. We weren’t disappointed – we had a quite a stop with a heard of bison. It was a little scary when the ranger came through tooting them and some started to run towards our van – luckily they know traffic and ran around it but it ws a little scary for a few seconds – which seemed like ages at the time. We checked out our camp site and then headed back into the park to see the geysers and the Grand Canyon – of yellowstone.

We tarted at Artists’ point for a great over look of the Southern Falls and sheer rock face and drops. We then headed to Old’s Tom’s hike and took the 400+ stairs down to the lookout. I must say I’d rather go up first and down second but anyway. It was well worth the effort!

Yellowstone has two thirds of the world’s  geysers. Phew do they stink of mustard, or boiled egg or sulphur maybe. We went on the loop around Old Faithful – which pretty much erupts every 77 minutes giver or take 10. It was set to go off at 4.56 pm. We looped around and saw a few small ones erupt 0 the triple and another one right in front of us. We made it back in time for Old Faithful a few minutes late. We were lucky to see it go off again at 6.20ish – ten minutes early but perfect timing for us as were leaving at 6.25pm. Had an Israeli dinner – egg, tomato and potato salad. Then we had to be very careful about what we left around and in our tents. All food in the van, no dropping on the ground and all toiletries in the locker. It was a little scary and we tried to jostle for tent position so we wouldn’t be the ones on the outside.

9.10.11

A beautiful day of rock pools, hiking and the hot springs –enter at your own risk!

Set out early to go on a hike near some hot springs. The prismatic lake was amazing with the different colours and we think there were some bear prints! Then headed up on hike to the lookout on a switch back trail. Another magnificent view of a smaller waterfall and the crater left from volcanic eruptions and the erupting geysers.

Stopped off for a tasty lunch at the Grill at Mammoth before headed out in search of the hot springs – enter at your own risk – can be too hot and scald and get microbes that can be harmful – yikes! Don’t get it on your face or in your nose was the instruction! It is formed where the boiling river and Yellowstone River meet so there is a mix of hot and cold water. Sometimes we would get a stream of hot water past us and the next second it was freezing cold! We sat and chatted for about an hour before getting out and drying ourselves off after using hand sanitiser and wipes for our faces.

Stopped one more time by a heard of bison on the way back frolicking in the fields – even rolling around before some crossed the road.

Later Yellowstone, into the Grand Tetons and through to the bucking broncos at Jackson, Wyoming.

Headed to the Grand Tetons today – a few Americans had said that they thought it was actually better than Yellowstone, so I hadto check that out. Only three of us were brave and fit enough to tackle the Canyon Springs hike. We caught a ferry across Jenny Island and then hiked to the Hidden Waterfall and Inspiration Point- a beautiful overlook of the snow-capped mountains behind us and still Lake in front of us. We then continued our trek through the bottom of the valley alongside the refreshing stream. We spotted some moose playing around and later having a drink many chipmunks and a beaver or badger. It didn’t seem to phased by us at first, then it checked out on e of the girls, then turned around to me and scooted off in the other direction. It was an awesome hike, one of the best I’ve done in some amazing scenery of mountains, jagged cliff faces, pines, a clear stream and wildlife all around us.

Next stop – Jackson, Wyoming. Actually set up camp early for a change and got ready to go to a ridgy didge Rodeo. It was better than I thought. Not many stayed on the bull in the first round for the 8 seconds – only one. Then there was the two man event where one goes for the head and the other to lasso their feet. The quickest was just over 5 seconds – woah. They also had bucking bronco rides, a few more successful at that and barrel races. The second round of bull riding was much more successful and one guy nearly got turfed into the crowd. Afterwards we went to the check out the ‘World Famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar’ where the seats at the bar were actually saddles. Another fabulous day surrounded by God’s amazingly decorated canvas.

The windy city

Bring on the road trip!

28/08/11

Rain, rain go away, maybe it should be, Hurricane, hurricane, go away. Checked the internet reports this morning and noo- all Broadway shows cancelled for the weekend, hop on hop off cancelled and public transport from 12pm – yikes.

It was a day in the hostel for us – luckily we had free wi-fi and phase 10 to keep us occupied. The wind and rain picked up throughout the afternoon and we copped it a few times in between trips to the grocers to grab some supplies for breaky, lunch and dinner. We ate out at a tavern on Amsterdam and it poured for a while – as usual when we venture outside it rains. I kept my food down today so it was much better. I was so lucky up the Empire State Building yesterday.

Sunday- Hurricane Irene was meant to hit today but it had been downgraded to a category 1so we were ok, only a little bit of rain and wind. Again we hung out in the hostel but ventured out for a walk along Central Park as it was actually closed. Quite a few fallen branches and puddles of water. On the way back I noticed a church and decided to stay for mass. It was very beautiful inside with stain glass windows. The American Priest was super fast and it was over in 40 minutes.

Whilst on the net we checked out some TV show diners and if they were real. Whilst we were doing nothing we found out that a show about nothing’s featured diner was only  9 blocks away from us, so we headed to Tom’s restaurant from Seinfeld. It was a bit of excitement after two days of disappointment as we missed our roadway shows.

29/08/11

Back in my element at sporting events, hunting autographs and souvenirs.

We made our way to Times Square to refund and chase Broadway tickets. I missed out on catching another show but Angela and Emma rebooked for the weekend ; ( - for me.

Next we headed out to Queens and Flushing Meadows for the opening day of the US open – number three in the Anna Slam. I was excited as we approached and hoped to see some good players on centre court. Unfortunately we didn’t get the big big names – Mardi Fish but we did get to see maria Sharapova in a tight 3 set match with ome really good come from behind tennis. Also checked out the prac courts – as usual and nearly got Rafa’s autograph again.

Emma and I wanted to follow the Aussies and we weren’t disappointed seeing Tomic win in straight sets and I was able to grab an autograph too. Additionally we saw Anastasia Rodionova and at the game Todd Woodbridge pulled up behind us so I grabbed his autograph. We were hanging out to see Sam Stosur and suddenly I saw her name on the board, although according to the schedule she shouldn’t have been on yet. We went in search of her game, went to the wrong court, got caught there till the next change of ends and then finally found Stosur and it was already into the second set – bother. She was killing her opponent so we watched few games until we had to get and meet up with Ange for dinner as it was already 8.30pm.

Met up at the Hard Rock Café, the line up was huge so we got our souvenirs, another Hard Rock shirt for me ; ) and decided to go to Ellen’s Stardust singing waiter diner. It was quite the experience with the waiters getting up on the benches and tables to sing songs. Many of them  trying to get a break and onto Broadway. It was another late night and poor Ange and Emma had to pack when we got back.

30/08/11

By myself again but brave enough to venture out and about in NYC – hop on hop off, the post office, Macy’s, ground zero and the Statue of Liberty.

My first mission this morning was to get a load of washing done and mail back a box of souvenirs and clothing. Everything fit in a moderate sized box -  phew!

Headed down to Penn Station to see where I had to go for my transfer to Newark International. Glad I did as it was quite the rabbit warren and bought my ticket then so I would have to with all my bags. Was at the Macy’s stop so checked out the ‘biggest department store in the world.’ Jus a big version of Myer really so wasn’t that impressed but their chrissy decorations were looking good – but it wasn’t open and ready yet.

Found the hop on hop and caught it a few stops to Ground Zero. Went to the preview shop first with the time line of the day and following months, a model of the redevelopment , a small liberty statue which had been outside one of the fire departments and adorned with memorabilia. I also bought my usual magnets and a ‘I love NY’ shirt in 9/11 memorial colours. I went around the site as there is so much construction work going on. It was a touching time, I felt quite sad, it seemed quiet and I could see other people experiencing the same kind of thing as me. To think we were on special ground. I so vividly recall that night – Aussie time, I was watching it live on the news with dad in the lounge room. First hearing about the first plane and then watching the second plane hit, the screams, the teary reporter and seeing the people jump from windows to their death in the buildings. To finally see this place and be able to relate to it and see it in context.

Hopped onto the next bus and was hoping it was third time lucky for the Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty ferry. Finally found it – yeh! Just had to walk through Battery Park. Bought my ticket and had to go through a full on security check – they didn’t like something in my hand bag – scanned it 3 times.

The ferry was only about 10-15 minutes and grabbed some good selfies along the way. I bought the audio tour so I felt like I wasn’t by myself and it was good to hear more about the surrounds and some stories of the construction. The background music really added to the experience and effect. Got some great snaps of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Liberty herself. She is actually green because of the oxidising copper – took about 3 months to go from brown and she is actually hollow, only a few mms thick and there is a spiral stair case up to the top – pity you had to book 3-5 days prior to go up the statue – would have been great. At least I go t to go up the Empire State building for New York. I tried to rush back and quickly see the Harry Potter/Pompei exhibition but it was $26 and I had under an hour so I thought I better head to Newark before it was dark.

This anxious part of my day was about to take place! I caught the train ok to 34th/Penn station and followed my early tri to the NJ transit area. It was absolutely packed and the trains are on the board but have no gate numbers and suddenly a gate number appears and there is a free for all scramble for the gate – it would have been one of the farthest ones away of course! I got on the more luxurious train after double checking it was the right one and sat back and tried to work out which stop was mine. Third stop and to the airport. I then had to walk up a huge flight of stairs with my 20+ kgs and find the airtrain to P4 lot. Once outside I had to wait about ten minutes for the Hilton shuttle – I was just hoping I didn’t need my flight stub to prove I had flown in. Straight on the bus thankfully and to my hotel and a luxurious double bed – enjoy it while it lasts coz I have 16 days of camping coming up! Relieved I arrived and glad I spent the day seeing more NY sites. I really enjouyed my Liberty Island trip and it was a moving experience to be near ground zero, nearly ten years ago since the twin towers – one of my most vivid memories of a world event.

31/08/11

Meeting my new family for the next three weeks – Trek America, through three states, country number 16 and to one of the greatest waterfalls in the world – Niagara Falls.

Met downstairs at 7.15 to try and find my northern trail group. I met our tour leady Christy and we spent quite some time filling out our forms and signing our lives away. We then headed off from Newark, New Jersey, went through Pennsylvania, into New York State and finally in the afternoon arrived at Niagara Falls. It was one of the reasons I chose the northern trip. We had a quick fly by walk past the Horseshoe ‘Canadian’ falls, went past the seemingly smaller American falls and then lined  up for the Maid of the Mist boat tour into the falls. It was majestic, powerful, scary, lots of wind and water spray in our face and exciting! It was cool to share it with my group and we took a great picky at the bow of the ship. Once we were back on shore we took a scenic detour up alongside the American Falls and up on the scenic lookout – amazing. Mine, Jen and Kaz’s hair was standing on end with the static electricity – hilarious to camp as it was getting dark around 830 to learn how to pitch our tents and make some dinner – bangers and mash. We could see Toronto across Lake Ontario.

1/09/11

September – no,  I go home this month! Lots of driving and a great adrenalin rush at one of the best roller coaster parks in the world – Cedar Park
Into Ohio, past the Cleveland Indians baseball field and to our camping grounds. We quickly pitched and set up so we headed to Cedar Point – oh yeah!

Oh my gosh – amazing roller coasters. First up the Mantis, a roller coaster that you stand up on and are buckled in. Then the Millienium Force – fast and long, great speed, dips and turns. Next we headed for the best one – the Dragster. Super fast, over 200km/hr straight then up a hundred metres and a u-turn straight down with a twist. All over in 17 seconds!!! My picture was awesome – I looked so terrified, wish I had bought it. We also went on some older rides but goodies – the Magnum with a beaut sunset in the background and the maverick. Woohoo what an adrenalin rush! Chicago tomorrow.
